About This Item

Paris,: Paul Klincksieck, 1892.. [iv], 51, [i] pp. Large 8vo. Original printed wrappers. With 48 coloured plates, preserved in the original illustrated half cloth portfolio (slightly discoloured and a slight stain; outer edges slightly rubbed). ¶ B.M. (N.H.), 786; Nissen 793; Stafleu/Cowan 2391; Davy de Virville, 210. Very accurate descriptions and illustrations of 108 species of algae with directions for collecting and preserving of algae.-- (Partly some slight foxing and or some slight dust soiling). Hariot was France foremost algologist of his time (a pupil of Bornet, who is considered the founder of scientific phycology in France) and his work has become quite scarce now. The illustration technique used for this work, coloured/tinted photogravures (héliogravure au grain de résine) reminds of 'nature printing' and was not widely used in botanical illustration. As a matter of fact, the only other exemple I know is that lovely little Pflanzen-Atlas to Seb. Kneipp's "Wasser-Kur".
