Plain white endpapers. 273 numbered pp, plus three blank. 44 chapters, including "A Glance at Slave-Talk", "The Strange Ubiquity of the Bible", "Marxism and Religion", "The Bounds of Patience", "Astral-Myth in the Bible", and more. Condition notes: Light wear to clipped dj with several small tears esp at folds. Spine/binding quite nice, good color, square, sharp corners. Interior shows half a dozen pages with fairly discreet marginalia/underlining (no highlighting); former owner's name and blind stamp to ffep; else unmarked. From the jacket: "...in order to be an atheist one must be a good Christian, and in order to be a Christian one must be a good atheist...the best thing about religion is that it is made for heretics...". Synopsis

Ernst Bloch (1885–1977) is one of the most important German Marxist thinkers of the 20th century and one of the great theorists of utopia. A friend of Walter Benjamin, Bertolt Brecht and Theodor Adorno, his works include The Principle of Hope , Spirit of Utopia and Traces . Peter Thompson , for many years the Head of Plant Physiology at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and a pioneer in the conservation of threatened plant species, laid the foundations for the Millennium Seed Bank.
