Atalanta's Garland

A first edition. 8vo., original paper covered patterned boards with a quarter cloth binding, a paper label to the upper board.; with the fragile original white dust jacket; pp. 192; A very good or better copy. The scarce original jacket has not been clipped. It has a tear to the top right hand corner of the front panel that has been repaired to the reverse of the jacket with archival tape. The upper and lower panels both display several spotting marks. Otherwise is is complete with nothing missing and without any other marks. The boards are sharp and without marks or wear. There is a previous owners name neatly written on the front free end paper. Overall an excellent copy and particularly rare with the jacket.  Atalanta's Garland was produced and published by the Edinburgh University Women's union to celebrate its 21st anniversary in 1926. The title comes from Greek mythology with Atalanta being a famed huntress and runner. The prefatory notice at the beginning of the book describes the aim of the book to celebrate the union and also to aid funding for an extension. The union managed to obtain an impressive submission of essays and pictures from big literary names of the time including two unpublished sketches from Katherine Mansfield, two poems from W.H. Davies, work from Hugh McDairmid, Naomi Mitchison and an essay from Virginia Woolf entitled 'A Woman's college from outside'. There is also a portrait of Woolf along with a drawing by Jessie M King. A rare book to find in such nice condition especially with the fragile jacket.  . Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1926.
