About This Item

Cambridge, London, New York: Cambridge University Press, 1985. Hardcover. Very Good/Good-. Cambridge studies in philosophy Forest green cloth boards with gilt titling on the spine, clean and square. Unpriceclipped blue DJ is edgeworn, especially at the top where the edge is tanning and curling a bit, with a 1/4-in. closed tear at spine head. Binding is sound. Interior is unmarked. 8vo. BOOK INFO: This book develops in detail the simple idea that assertion is the expression of belief. In doing so it promises to challenge a number of windespread and entrenched views about the relations of language and mind.... In its technical detail, the theory constitutes a refinement of 'probabilistic semantics'. It improves on previous views by taking account of the fact that we are not always perfectly rational. However, it also offers a significant advance in generality on theories of meaning couched in terms of truth conditions, because it builds in the fact that not all sentences express a high degree of belief that something is true. Includes epilogue, bibliography, index of names and index of key terms. (-from the preface)
