About This Item

Chippenham: Picton, 1987. 145 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, map. "The campaign of 1895 into the interior of West Africa to capture the King of Ashanti, Premph, and senior chiefs, was led by Colonel Sir Francis Scott. For this successful undertaking some 2,500 Ashanti Stars were awarded. Mainly unnamed and often detached from named medals in a group, this campaign star has always attracted a fairly high price but little has been written on the forces participating, of the march up country or the previous and subsequent medal entitlement of the participants. Written and compiled by two members of the Orders and Medals Research Society, (this book) is designed to be of interest to all interested in medal collecting and the research into the life of the man who earned the medal. This was the last campaign in which the British Army wore red tunics; it produced a long casualty list of dead and fever victims and was to prove a training ground for the 129 officer, 34 of whom subsequently rose to Generals rank. Besides the complete P.R.O roll (WO/100/79) of all British and West Indian participants, often with considerable personal detail, this work contains much previously unpublished material from both officers and men as well as contemporary newspaper reports, excerpts from Regimental magazines and the official account of the expedition." Very faint cigarette odour, minor wrinkle at bottom of spine, slight waviness to fore-edge of textblock. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, light browning at edges.. Not Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good.
