About This Item

The Hamlyn Publishing Group Limited, Middlesex, England, 1978 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 15 x 22.5 cm; 0.7 Kg; 176 pages with illustrations throughout; Used book with minor signs of wear. The dust jacket is now protected with a permanent clearcover.; This book is designed to be of practical assistance to the collector, with the needs of the new enthusiasm particularly in mind. Bernard Price explains the basic terms that anyone interested in the subject needs to know. The differences between pottery and porcelain are clearly outlined, as are the various processes that go to making the finished object. The development of the different styles in English ceramics is charted, as well as the most important foreign influences, in particular that of the Orient. The main English potteries and porcelain factories are described, together with their characteristic feature. This information is seldom so readily accessible in one book and will be of immense help to both the amateur and the more knowledgeable collector. The author also chronicles the life and work of Josiah Wedgwood, the man responsible for making English ceramics competitive with such great European factories as Meissen and Sèvres, and who is, of course, still a household name. Bernard Price rightly believes that products of the neneteenth century have for too long been despised and neglected. He therefore discusses a number of the most usual items from this period, such as pot lids and transfer printed ware. The text is supplemented by over a hundred black-and-white pictures as well as twenty-four in colour. Line drawings complement these illustrations, showing the reader what he must look for when identifying a piece: marks, handle-shapes, foot-rims, bases and so on. With this handbook anyone interested in pottery and porcelain is well-equipped to extend their knowledge and enjoyment of the subject..
