New York: Harry N Abrams, 1968. Hardcover. In exceptionally good condition/In exceptionally good condition. Octavo, [22.5cm/9inches], full gilt-embossed maize-coloured cloth w/ mylar-protected dust jacket, pp. 264, indexed. Illustrated with 127 b-w halftone platess. Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. ... German Hafner studied classical archaeology, prehistory and art history in Berlin, Vienna and Heidelberg and received his doctorate in 1938 with Arnold von Salis in Heidelberg with a dissertation on four teams in front view. He then edited the volumes of the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum for the Baden State Museum Karlsruhe. After the military service (1940-45) he was a research assistant at the newly founded Institute of Classical Archaeology at the University of Mainz,where he habilitatedin 1951. In 1957 he was appointed an unscheduled professor, and in 1963 he was appointed to the Scientific Council. He retired in 1976. He continued his research until shortly before his death. He was a member of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). German Hafner dealt with the entire field of ancient art, especially portrait and ideal sculpture.
