About This Item

New York and Munich: The Museum for African Art and Prestel Verlag, 1996. Very Good/Very Good. New York and Munich: The Museum for African Art and Prestel Verlag, 1996. First Edition. Tall Quarto (31x24x2.5cm); 267pp, including glossary and bibliography. A pristine invitation card for the Baltimore opening of the Baga show, in its envelope, is laid in.

Photographic dustjacket. Volume in off-white cloth with green stamping on spine and front panel. Faint rubbing to jacket along top edge. Binding is sound and pages unmarked.

Much more than a survey of remarkable West African objects, the volume traces Baga art through the lens of ancient and recent migrations, ricocheting 19th- and 20th-century regime changes, and the Baga will to self- and cultural-preservation affecting every aspect of their art, culture, and society.

This is the richly augmented catalog accompanying the Baga exhibition at the Museum for African Art in NYC from 4 October 1996 to 5 January 1997, and traveling afterward to Baltimore.
