About This Item

New York, NY Oxford University Press, 1995. Hardcover First Edition; First Printing indicated. First Edition; First Printing indicated. Near Fine in Very Good+ DJ: The Book shows only minute indications of use: mild shelving wear along the bottom edge; faint smudging at the fore-edge; the upper front corner shows the gentlest bump; the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. The DJ shows just a hint of wear to the extremities; a half-inch, closed tear at the bottom edge of the front panel; very mild rubbing; the price is unclipped; mylar-protected. No longer 'As New', but remains close to it. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 694pp. Hardback with DJ. An anthology to the core, "Art from the Ashes" is a fantastic look into the Holocaust genre. This was one of the primary texts used in my graduate level Holocaust class and it was an eye opener. I thought I knew a lot about the Holocaust but this anthology tore that idea apart and replaced it with a raw and gritty perspective. Although I have not read every entry, (about 3/4) these entries were fantastic. You get a taste of everything from non-fictional accounts through diaries, autobiographical stories, essays, poetry, and fictional shorts. I have to say Appelfeld's "Tzili" was one of my favorite entries. If you want a different perspective on the Holocaust or if you are just simply interested in non western literature, this is an anthology for you. As the subject material suggests, some stories are extremely graphic and can put readers to tears.
