New York: Abbeville Press, 1990. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 3 volumes. color frontis, illustrations (many color), index, 422p. 396, 396p. Original red cloth. djs. 33 cm. Origional slipcase is sound with some fading of cloth and bits of wear. Jacket on Volume One has a vertical light blue streak from something that rubbed against it. INSCRIBED on title-page of Volume One ("For Ray Smith -- one very heavy book -- Best -- B. W. Gerdts"). Ray is mentioned in the Acknowledgements as Curator of the John Slade Ely House in New Haven but his more important contribution to this massive work was as R. W. Smith, Bookseller since it was Ray in that role who located and supplied Gerdts with a large number of the really hard-to-find items on regional art and artists. Heavy set -- requires extra postage.
