About This Item

Paris, Vivant Gaultherot, 1550. *** Rare edition containing the only two known works by Pantheo. Illustrated with a T and O world map on title and 15 full page woodcuts. If Giovanni Pico della Mirandola can be called the Father of Christian Cabala, then a fellow Italian, the Venetian priest Giovanni Agostino Pantheo, assuredly deserves the title Father of Cabalistic Alchemy or Chymical Cabala, for he is without doubt the first Christian author to have attempted a combination of alchemy and Cabala. Pantheo develops a hybrid 'Cabala of Metals' (Cabala metallorum) in two works: the Ars transmutationis metallicae (Art of Metallic Transmutation), published in 1519 and The Voarchadumia contra alchimiam (Voarchadumia against Alchemy) which appeared in 1530. (...) Pantheo is a valuable instance of a laboratory practitioner engaging with polyglot traditions in a 'cabalistic' spirit, in an attempt to discover the numerical secrets and concordances of elusive alchemical terms. The significance of Pantheo's work is increased by the interest taken in it by a crowd of later cabalistic alchemists, including Jacques Gohory, Blaise de Vigenère, John Dee, Andreas Libavius and Khunrath. In his preface addressed to Pope Leo X, Pantheo states that his work was 'very recently put together from varied readings of the philosophers. He wishes it to contain the sincere truth of the secret of transmutation, to abolish deceits and incredulity, to reveal the stone to the sons of wisdom and to conceal it from the ignorant .... Similarly in a second preface to the reader he promises to elucidate completely this most weighty theme of the transmutation of metals. After the manner of the Lullian alchemical treatises he sets letters for stages in the process of transmutation and gives diagrams of the four elements and primary qualities ' (L. Thorndike A History of Magic and Experimental Science V, p.538). Very fine copy in contemporary vellum. Duveen Bibliotheca alchemica et chemica p. 450 : "of great rarity". Ferguson II, pp.166-7. Thorndike A History of Magic and Experimental Science V, p.538. - -.
