About This Item
Germany: Publisher Not Stated, 1928. Ephemera small oblong, good condition, colour ship drawing front & rear cover, corners creased front cover, five paper pockets (needles missing), small square of brown paper with cover (has 3 needles), needles are slightly rusted, minor edgewear. n/a pp. A scarce German Navy and Army needlebook. The needlebooks apparently were never given to the Army or Navy, they were used at home. The front cover has a colour image of 'The Bremen' and the rear cover of 'The Europa' (passenger ships). The pockets for the needles have a gold plate with a green lion image and the words: 'Extra good large eye needles registered Peerless Sharps made in Germany'. The numbers 1, 1/2, 5, 3/9, 6 are on the gold plates. 'Silver steel' is in black writing at the top of the card and 'Hardened in Oil' at the bottom of the card. They are in paper folded pockets in a oblong folded card. Only 3 needles out of 12 in total are present. The Bremen was launched in Germany by Norddeutscher Lloyd Line (NDL) in the late 1920s, and gutted by fire in 1941. The Europa was captured by the Allies in 1945 and used as a troopship, then it went to France as an ocean liner named Liberte. It was scraped in 1963. (No date, but about 1928 or later.).
