Michigan State University Press, 1960. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good. Hardcover. xvii+ 235 pp. with index. Introduction by Howard Mumford Jones. Fine in very good dust jacket. The story of the First South Carolina Volunteers, the first slave regiment mustered into the service of the United States during the Civil War. Higginson, a Unitarian minister, author and soldier was an active and militant abolitionist in the 1840s and 1850s and a member of the "Secret Six" who supported John Brown. A white man, during the Civil War, he was a colonel in the First South Carolina Vols from 1862 to 1864. Following the war, he continued to write about the experiences of Black soldiers. This work was first published in 1870.

Synopsis

R. D. Madison is a professor of English at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He has edited several volumes of military and naval history, including William Bligh and Edward Christian’s The Bounty Mutiny for Penguin Classics.
