About This Item
London: Hugh K. Elliott Ltd, 1966 8vo (21.5 cm), [12, XXVIII, 124 pp. Publisher's cloth. A facsimile reprint of a bibliography of arithmetical books (1847) by a British mathematician and logician Augustus De Morgan (1806 - 1871). A chronologically arranged annotated list of some 500 items is followed by a list of 1580 names of reported authors. "Yet "Arithmetical Books" remains of use to the bibliographer and historian, as De Morgan's successor in the bibliography of arithmetics, David Eugene Smith, was not slow to recognize. It is a minor classic in its own right. And not the least enjoyable part of it are De Morgan's excursions into such topics as Cocker's Arithmetic or the length of the geometric foot, which are excellent examples of his historical ingenuity" (from the Introduction to this edition by A. Rupert Hall).
