About This Item
The editor, Gilles was the Scottish historiographer to the British crown for Scotland. The knowledge of Aristotle and his philosophy perhaps made its way into the British politics of the era and its approach to both the French Revolution and Napoleon . And from then on into the 19th and early 20th century through the first world war. Aristotle was a student of Plato. Plato called Aristotle the soul of his school and when Aristotle was absent Plato said he was talking to the deaf. But Aristotle did not like Plato. Plato did know why Aristotle did not like him. Plato, which means "Abundance", a name given to Plato by his wrestling coach, because of his broad shoulders for whom Plato was a champion wrestler, an important sport for the ancient Greeks. But some people said Plato was called abundant because Plato was fat. And that's why there are so many symposiums, all based around eating. Just a little background to the book.
First, the printing is old style, with an elongated s. The front and rear covers are heavily scuffed and worn at the corners. The spine shows lots of wear. The spine is decorated in gold gilt with hubs, but is missing most of the leather of the title spot. The text is unmarked. There at least three previous owners names, one of whom was a member of the British titled family, on the recto endpaper. The free flyleaf has a brown spot between the title and author's name. There is marginal notation of chapter and topic. Index..there is a second volume to the set. A third volume was published in 1804. For this ancestor's guide to our approach to ethics and politics we are asking $ 250.
Business aside, this book is a warning to writers not to destroy your writing. Aristotle's work was "Lost" unread for 250 years and then blew the socks off some kids who found Aristotle in his basement. The rest, they say, is history.
