About This Item

Albuquerque, NM University of New Mexico Press, 1996. Hardcover First Edition [1996], so stated. First Edition [1996], so stated. Fine: Binding square and secure; text clean. Virtually 'As New', showing no flaws. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 83pp. Decorated End Papers. There is an inscription, difficult to decipher, at the bottom corner of the front free endpaper; may be from the author, perhaps not. Hardcover, Lacks DJ. The poems in Arias recollect journeys through time and place, emotions and moods. They are also a lyric attempt to present the poet as a crossbreeder of divergent, sometimes exotic poetic strains, as someone who creates new and vigorous hybrids, a multiform richness of feeling and thought. As a girl, Mary Burritt spent extended periods living in southern France and Spain, where her father studied and taught languages. That experience, reflected in her poems, led to her interest in modernist poetry in Spanish, French, and Italian. Although European and Latin American authors have influenced her work, she considers the American Southwest her lyric home. Arias is an anachronism, modernist and romantic in a postmodern age. It also has the universal appeal of lyric and romantic literature, evoking and celebrating basic emotions and experiences: fear, anger, love, death, sorrow, and joy.
