About This Item
Translated into English dactyllic-hexameter by Charles E. MacBean, esq. A big fan of MacBean, Lyle E. Daniel, at the time the English Department Chairman of Vachon H.S. in Vachon, Wash. states: "Readers will be happy to find his rendition of lines so natural, so honest, and so beautiful that MacBean easily establishes dactylic hexameter, once thought unrendable in English, as a valid and important English meter. Thus the Greek epic lives again with its music restored in powerful, rolling dactyls. It is a joy to have one of the oldest of the Achaian stories (Homer speaks of the Argonaut adventure as if it were universally known), harmonized from the various versions by Apollodoris about 265 B.C., brought to life again. In a sense the "Argonautica" is a prelude to the "Iliad". Here we meet the generation before the Trojan War, the fathers of Achilleus, of the two names Aias, of Patroklos, and others. It should be our first glimpse into the age of heroes and of the remarkable civilization that followed. This is a magnificent poem, and in a magnificent rendition by Charles E. MacBean."
