Illustrated with a woodcut frontispiece, additional pictorial title and 18 full page woodcut illustrations. First US Edition/First Printing. Ex-library item with typical markings present (numbers present to the spine, bookplate present to the front pastedown). Bound in pebbled cloth boards with titles present to the spine. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Charles Francis Hall (c. 1821 – November 8, 1871) was an American Arctic explorer, best known for his collection of Inuit testimony regarding the 1845 Franklin Expedition and the suspicious circumstances surrounding his death while leading the American-sponsored Polaris expedition in an attempt to be the first to reach the North Pole. The expedition was marred by insubordination, incompetence, and poor leadership. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
