About This Item

Introductory texts of this book includes a note by Abby White Howells on early European explorers who visited this area, "memoranda" by the author on possible architectural styles and builders associated with construction of the buildings, and an introduction to building techniques and known builders of the time by William Lawrence Bottomley. Following that are 301 photographic plates of the remarkable buildings constructed in the Portsmouth New Hampshire region during colonial and early national times. Many of these houses still stand, and make Portsmouth one of the few seacoast towns that retains its historical beauty today. The book has something over 217 pages, and includes an index at the back.
