"It is difficult to look at a building as famous as the Parthenon without preconceived ideas. But in this radical re-examination Professor Rhys Carpenter questions statements and challenges assumptions which have been accepted for centuries. So far from being a miracle opposition and calculation, the Parthenon is shown by him to have been a re-building of a partially completed temple: a considerable element of improvisation in makeshift entered into its creation. And Professor Carpenter suggest that the two architects, Kallikrates and Iktinos, were not collaborators but rivals, patronised by opposing political factions." -- from rear panel blurb.
