Dust jacket has light bumping and creasing to edges and light overall scuffing. Now in an archival-quality (removable) Brodart Cover. NOT Ex-Library. NO remainder marks. [From jacket flaps] A reassessment of Thucydides' views on the Peloponnesian War is a basic element in this provocative and tightly argued history of the first ten years of the war. A sequel to Professor Kagan's The Outbreak of the Peloponnesian War, it is the first full-scale account of the Archidamian War to be written since the early years of this century. Taking a chronological approach that allows him to present at each stage the choices that were open to both sides in the conflict, Professor Kagan focuses on political, economic, diplomatic, and military developments. He evaluates the strategies used by the Spartans and the Athenians and reconsiders the roles played by several key individuals. Basing his argument on ancient sources and on new evidence produced by modern scholarship, he rejects Thucydides' conclusions about numerous fundamental issues and makes a strong case for his own interpretations. This distinguished book fills a longstanding need for a thorough analytic account of the period and it should stimulate lively debate.
