About This Item

New York, 1796. 178pp. plus 1p. of book advertisements. Modern cloth. Final seven leaves with substantial foremargin gnawing, some paper loss, but text unaffected. Else a near fine copy, untrimmed. With the bookplate of William L. Clements. New York printing of this classic defense of the Bible and revealed religion against the pioneering work of that patriotic atheist, Tom Paine. Such responses probably kindled Paine's distaste for revealed religion, for his attacks on it only became more vehement in old age. EVANS 31569.
