About This Item

Merrimac, MA: Destiny Publishers, 1946 Destiny Publishers, Merrimac, MA. 1946. Hardcover. Printing/edition not stated. Book is tight, square, and unmarked but for scattered pencil check marks in the text and the F/O name on the FFFP in pencil. Book Condition: Very Good; bumping to upper tips; light shelfwear to head, tail, and tips; light soiling to boards. No DJ. Blue cloth boards and spine with yellow lettering on the spine. 292 pp 12mo. These 14 books from part of the sacred literature of the Alexandrian Jews, and with the exception of the Second Book of Esdras are found interspersed with the Hebrew Scriptures in the ancient copies of the Septuagint or Greek Version of the Old Testament. They are the product of the era subsequent to the Captivity; having their origin partly in Babylonia, partly in Palestine and Egypt and other countries. Some of them form an historical link between the Old and New Testament. The narratives are partly historical records and partly allegorical. Apocrypha are written works, often of unknown authorship or doubtful origin. In Christianity, the word apocryphal was first applied to writings which were to be read privately rather than in the public context of church services—edifying Christian works which were not considered canonical Scripture. In the wake of the Protestant Reformation, the word apocrypha came to mean "false, spurious, bad, or heretical". A clean very presentable copy.
