New York, Harper & Row. 1974. . First US edition, first printing. PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. 8vo; publisher's brown cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Minor spotting to the fore edge, heavier at top edge, endpapers a little browned and with a small stain at rear, boards a little mottled. A decent copy in the mildly sunned dust jacket.
With the author's signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, 'for John & Rosamond, with much gratitude & affection from K. How much of my happiness in the USA. 1977 has been due to you.' The recipients were the art critic and journalist John Russell and his wife. Russell was a major contributor to the Sunday Times of London and the New York Times. Clark and the Russells had been friends for decades.
