About This Item

London, Jonathan Cape, 1952. . First English edition, inscribed by the author 'With regards from the author, Maurice Herzog', 8vo (20 x 15 cm), written on half title, previous owner's signature on front free endpaper, 8 maps and panoramas including the large folding panorama at rear, numerous black and white illustrations, slight spotting to preliminary pages; publisher's light blue cloth, spine slightly faded, original pictorial dust wrapper, corners a little rubbed; overall a very good copy; 288pp.
Herzog (1919-2012) was a French mountaineer who led this remarkable ascent of Annapurna, one of the highest mountains in the world. This French expedition was the first to climb over 8000 feet. They also explored, reconnoitred and climbed all within one season and without the use of supplemental oxygen. It was a historic climb.

This bestselling book which includes an introduction by Eric Shipton inspired a generation of mountaineers. Inscribed copies are scarce.
