About This Item
Henry Longstreet, Philadelphia, 1880; First American Edition; 8vo, 34 pages; printed wraps. Number 13 of the parts issue of British historian Frances Budge’s bibliographical portraits of early Quaker leaders, first serialized in "Friends Quarterly Examiner" prior to being collected and published in a single volume by Samuel Harris & Co., London in 1877. This issue devoted to British-born James Dickenson (1659-1741), powerful Quaker preacher and companion of Robert Barclay, George Fox, and Thomas Wilson, who first sailed for the New World in 1691, and after a long and perilous journey paused to preach two months in Barbados amidst an ongoing plague before proceeding to America, where he remained for two years prior to returning to England. Dickenson visited America twice more, in 1694 and in 1713, continuing to aid Friends in New York, Pennsylvania, Carolina, and Maryland before his final return to England in 1715. Very Good, tiny chip in the blank margin at bottom left corner of the front wrap, not affecting text in any way.
