London: Secker & Warburg, 1956. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good. 8" by 5.5". None. A smart first edition of this satirical novel from English writer Angus Wilson, signed by the author. First edition. Signed by the author to the title page. In 1912, at Melpham in Suffolk, the tomb of a seventeenth-century missionary was excavated by Professor Stokesay and found to contain a pagan figure of a most un-Christian form. Gerald Middleton was near the scene of this dramatic discovery, and through his life has been linked to this event. Written by Sir Angus Frank Johnstone-Wilson, an English novelist and short story writer who was one of England's first openly gay authors. In the original brown cloth binding. Externally, excellent. Original price-clipped dust wrapper is smart with light wear to the extremities and sunning to the spine. The odd small closed tear to the panel edges. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with light age toning to the first and last few pages. Author's signature to the title page. Near Fine
