About This Item

Franklin Center, PA: The Franklin Library, 1976. [1976] Full Leather-Bound Fine Binding Hardcover, 897 pages. WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE IN 1956. THIS IS NOT A FACSIMILE, A TRADE BOOK, OR A BOOK-ON-DEMAND. THIS IS THE 1976 FINE BINDING BY FRANKLIN LIBRARY. Beautiful top grain cowhide binding features gilt designs and lettering, five ridges on back (spine). Edges gilded and cover ornamentation are genuine gold. The fabric endsheets were dyed and moiréed. Satin ribbon book mark, bound in. The acid-free book paper is a special "1854" Medium Cream paper. Franklin Library is no longer in business, so all leather-bound books by this publisher are collectible. Condition: Some scratches and rubbing to gilt on edges (mostly from shelving and handling), else overall Near Fine. The book was shelved in a temperature-controlled cabinet. Free of the smoke smell of a cigarette or cigar smoker. This novel is about the Civil War's notorious Andersonville Prison in Georgia. The story became a best-seller and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1956. The famous writer about the Civil War, Bruce Catton, called it "the best Civil War novel I have ever read . . . it's a book which picks up the heartache and the tragedy, the desperate viciousness and the reasonless, inexplicable violence and destruction of that terrible conflict." The New York Times praised the novel about "the nation that tore itself to pieces in war." The haunting drawings by artist Joseph Smith of life in the notorious Southern prison camp are reminiscent of the work of the field artists who covered the Civil War. A remarkable, prize-winning story in an all-leather binding. Collectible. Note: We are a well-established, well-respected, ethical book dealer in business since 1991. We describe the condition of our books thoroughly and honestly, so you'll know exactly what you will receiving when you order. We ship promptly. . Leather. Near Fine. Illus. by Joseph Smith.
