About This Item

Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1962. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 8vo (super). Translated from the German by Michael Bullock and Alisa Jaffa. ix, 110 p.p. + 76 p.p. B&W plates. Twelve tipped-in colour illustrations incl. frontis (paginated). Map endpapers. Teal cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine. Top edge red. Chafing to spine and foot of boards. Bumping to spine ends and corners. Dust jacket has a few short tears, chips to spine head and corners, long tear to rear cover, sunning to spine and edges, light soiling to rear. The author traces the history of glass-making from its origins in Egypt before 2000 B.C. through successive developments that were brought about in Syria, by the Jews in Palestine, and the Roman and Byzantine empires - from the latter of which the glass-makers of Venice inherited much of their lore and skill. Neuburg covers the development of colour, lthe techniques involved in making glass beads and of millefiori, glass thread, mosaic, and other types of decoration, and the developments in the methods of making glass - particularly the discovery of glass blowing - which radically affected the shapes of vessels.
