About This Item
Island Press, 1989. First edition. Softcover. Near fine. Signed on the first blank and with a typed letter signed (TLS) laid in to Congressman Peter Hoagland from Norse on letterhead for the Center for Marine Conservation ( Norse was acting as its Chief Scientist). Dated 1990. He conveys the book and discusses the spotted owl-timber controversy detailed for some portion of the book. The letter is part environmental advocacy, part book publicity. Woven through his chapters in the book are short essays by other scientists, including several on climate change and the potential for forests as carbon storage by R.A. Houghton and John Firor (the later's chapter is titled "Global Climate Change: Some Basics"). A nice snapshot of regional habitat battles beginning to reference global, climate change concerns. This book was published the same year as Bill McKibben's landmark climate change work *The End of Nature.* A very near fine paperback with light creasing to spine ends and one smudge to outer face of the text block. The letter is about fine, folded across its middle..

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
