About This Item

London England: Picador, 1984. This book is about reincarnation. Menenhetet, a courtier in the twentieth dynasty kingdom of Rameses and Nefititi, is reborn three times; charioteer, general, High priest, general again. In seven books, Mailer explores the seven stages or components of the Egyptian soul - Name, Power, Angel, Heart, Double, Shadow and Remains - as they range across vast tracts of time and yet are contained within one person. The book is violent, sexual, and scatological, demands concentration of attention, and is one of the most profound modern statements about the nature and destiny of mankind..(We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.) . 1st Picador Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Paperback.

Synopsis

Ancient Evenings is a novel by Norman Mailer. It deals with the lives of two protagonists, one young, one old, in a very alien ancient Egypt marked by journeys by the dead, reincarnation, and violent and hyper-sexual gods and mortals in a complex combination of historical fiction, allegory, poetic flight, confession and spiritual meditation.  Crossing three millennia to Pharaonic Egypt, this tale returns to that land's essences - the war, magic, gods, death and reincarnations, the lusts, ambitions, jealousies, and betrayals, sadistically admiring all sorts of violence and atrocity, both in sarcasm and reality.
