About This Item

New York, Toronto, London: Whittlesey House / McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc, 1956. 1st edition. Cloth. Good/Very Good. Paul Galdone. 1st edition. A Good copy in Very Good dust jacket. 4to., chiefly illustrated with color drawings; tricolor end papers. Bound in blue cloth in illustrated dust jacket. The blue cloth boards have light soiling and edge wear, and some speckling in the color. The dj is price-clipped and the rear flap has been cut away. The dust jacket is otherwise very nice looking, with bright vibrant colors. The dust jacket is now protected in a mylar sleeve. There is an Anatole reprint that looks deceptively like a first edition but it lacks Whittlesey House as additional publisher on title page, is bound in red cloth and lacks the illustrations on jacket reverse.

Anatole is the title character in a series of children's picture books written by Eve Titus and illustrated by Paul Galdone. "Anatole" is also the name of the series. The ten books were originally published from 1956 to 1979. Two books in the series, Anatole in 1957, and Anatole and the Cat in 1958, were named Caldecott Honor books.

Synopsis

Eve Titus was the author of numerous bestselling and beloved children's books, including the Anatole books and many chapter books about a mouse detective--Basil of Baker Street. Ms. Titus pased away in 2002. Paul Galdone illustrated nearly three hundred books during his long career, many of which he also retold. His renditions of nursery tales such as The Little Red Hen , and Three Little Kittens have become classics. He illustrated nearly all of Ms. Titus' books, winning a Caldecott Honor award for both Anatole and Anatole and the Cat . Mr. Galdone passed away in 1986.
