Large Quarto. 4 leaves, xvi, foldout map, xvii-xviii, 40, xx, foldout map, 41-78pp. Three quarter pebbled cloth over decorative boards. Title page printed in red and black illustrated with Amsterdam coat of arms. History of Amsterdam by city recorder and historian Jan Wagenaar, its rise, accolades, stories, privileges, commerce, buildings, church state, schools, shootings, guilds and rulings, volume one of three. Illustrated with 20 impressive engravings of Amsterdam convents by Jacobus Houbraken and two foldout map engravings, one of 1544 Amsterdam by Cornelis Anthoniszoon, the second "Old Amsterdam" in 1760 credited to publisher Issak Tirion. In this volume Wagenaar describes the rise, growth and highlights of Amsterdam. It contains two appendices with city streets, one organized by city districts, the other in alphabetical order. Text in Dutch. Binding with wear along edges, crack at right lower corner of front cover, some scuffing of covers and spine somewhat sunned. Endpapers and title page browned with previous owner's name inked to inside front cover. Some foxing in block, minor in engravings with some foxing in two of them. Engraving of "Old Amsterdam" with explicit staining. Text block at rear with browned right upper corner. Binding and interior in overall good- to good+ condition.
