An environmental history. The book considers the history of the environmental movement in America. The term "conservation", popularized by Chief Forester Gifford Pinchot of President Theodore Roosevelt's administration, is more often than not employed to vility sportsmen as wildlife destroyers. Historian John Reiger shows that is was actually sportsmen, particularly hunters, that spearheaded the modern conservation movement, and, who remain its most important supporters and activists.
