About This Item
[African American] Reuter, Edward Byron. The American Race Problem: A Study of the Negro. Crowell's Social Science Series. First Printing, Hardcover 1927. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell. 448 pages. Measures 5.5" x 8". Missing Dust Jacket. The author reviews the various phases of "the negro problem in America." He points out that the growing prejudice of race and caste feeling among the negroes and whites retards the cultural advance of the negroes and to that extent the whole nation. In the introduction, the author reviews the whole situation, stating that the negro people today offer the best opportunity in the modern world to study a race evolution. Next he studies race as a sociological concept, racial differences, the contact of races and cultures, the primitive negro when he first reached America, the disappearance of his original language and customs, and the effect of slavery upon his status. "The negro since freedom" is given almost half of the book, under such topics as "The economic status of the negro," "Education of the negro," "The growth of race con-consciousness," etc. The purpose of the book is exposition and analytical rather than to seek solutions for prevailing problems. Blue boards with gilt spine titles; rubbed edges, and front dlyleaf missing. Very clean copy and overall, in very good condition.
