Iowa City, IA, 1943. I:1 through VIII:12 (lacking VI:2,4, VII:4 and VIII 1-3 for all published). Fifty-three issues. Quarto and octavo. Printed self-wrappers and printed wrappers. Seventeen issues are duplicate LC Deposit copies, with appropriate stamps, and one with accompanying deposit letter; six other issues bear stamps from other sources (only three of them aesthetically bothersome); the remaining issues are unmarked. Apart from the stamps, a few scattered issues show tanning or modest soiling, the first is a bit darkened and chipped at the wrapper edges, but most are very good or better. Edited by Wilbur Schramm and Paul Engle, and later, by Engle and associates, including Jean Garrigue. Published monthly through volume V, then quarterly in revised format. A significant University-sponsored periodical, partaking of - but not hampered by - its regional and academic roots. Contributors include T. S. Eliot, E. Douglas Branch, Rukeyser, Villa, Paul Bowles, Rölvaag, Norman Macleod, Grant Wood, T.H. Benton, Stegner, Adamic, March, Abbe, Frost, Stafford, Stuart, Creekmore, Jolas, Roethke, Van Duyn, Neruda, Frank, Welty, Taylor, Stevens, W.C. Williams, et al. HOFFMAN, et al, p. 329.

New York: The American Spectator Publishing Company, 1933. Newspaper, 8.75 x 11.25 inches. Folded newsprint with expected toning and brittle folds, but largely free of material chips and tears. Each issue includes the original wrap-around band. Near-fine.. An excellent collection of the first seven issues of The American Spectator founded by George Jean Nathan, Eugene O'Neill, Ernest Boyd, Theodore Dreiser, and James Branch in 1932 to publish original literary and opinion pieces from distinguished American and European writers. Not to be confused with the conservative magazine of the same name, The American Spectator set out to advance original fiction, opinion, and literary criticism by inviting each contributor to direct and self-edit their own articles, and it further set itself apart by refusing to sell advertising space in its pages. The first issue sold for fifty cents (which was then a rather high price for newsprint) and sold out, prompting an additional print-run of twenty thousand copies,… Read More
