About This Item
Paris: ACR Edition, 1994. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. With a typed signed letter (TLS) by the author laid in. Between 1843 and 1922, American artists travelled to the Near East and North Africa, painting all that they witnessed. Edwin Lord Weeks and Frederick Bridgman are amongst the most famous but there was also Francis Bacon, Samuel Colman, Swain Gifford, and many others who specialized in Oriental compositions. Through their biographies, activities, and travels, the author has endeavoured to let the artists speak for themselves, narrating their adventures and explaining their objectives, aided by correspondence, travel journals, and various articles and books. The tenth volume in The Orientalists series. Quarto 288 p. with numerous illustrations (most color). Original gray cloth binding, with silver titles and a ribbon marker. A near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket with a minor crease to the rear flap. Housed in the publisher's slipcase.
