About This Item

Philadelphia, PA: D.B. Canfield and Co., 1856. Soft cover. VG+. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Original softcover tall (9 3/4") monthly publication. We have 15 different editions all from the estate of the Pennsylvania attorney Reuben C. Hale. Mr. Hale (1812-1863) graduated from Yale in 1830 and was a prominent figure in Pennsylvania state and local law practice, appointed Surveyor of the Port of Philadelphia and eventually named Quartermaster General of Pennsylvania in 1861. He was equally prominent in voluntary military units in central Pennsylvania and eventually carried the rank of General. Pages show minimal to heavy foxing and some copies have dampstains and spots. Please see photos provided as they are of the actual publication that is listed for sale. Most carry the signature showing R.C. Hale or Reuben C. Hale. Each copy has been placed in a protective polypropylene bag. This copy is the March 1856 edition but is not like the others as it DOES NOT have a valid signature present. The name Hale is written very lightly in pencil near the top of the cover but since this is only the last name and is in very light pencil we are not considering it signed. Pages are bright and most of the pages are uncut/unread. This is one of the nicest copies we have. This is considered NOT SIGNED by Mr. Hale as the signature is faint and only partial. Attached photos should show any other condition issues.

Terms of Sale

Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Purchases will ship by US Media Mail or Priority Mail (if buyer selects) and higher priced items may have insured placed on the order and will typically ship within one business day. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 5 lbs., but only in unusual cases. Insurance is available upon request though we normally place insurance on any item of $75 or higher at no additional cost to the buyer. Non-US sales will ship by First Class International or Global Priority. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 4 lbs.

We always take extra care in packaging and shipping. Books are typically wrapped in packing paper or bubblewrap before packaged in a sturdt shipping box. All orders, even those shipped by US Media Mail, will be given a USPS tracking number which will be sent to the buyer so they will know when to expect arrival. Please let us know if there is a book with incorrect or missing photos. We recently moved the inventory to Biblio and a title or two may have had issues with the photos being transferred over.

Yesterday's Book shop is owned and operated by a disabled veteran. Due to my limitations, I often have to rely on speech-to-text software to list the books. If the description has typos ("and pages" instead of "end pages", pace downs instead of pastedowns, guilt instead of gilt, etc,) PLEASE let me know so I can correct the listing. The software spells words by phonetics and can make errors that I may not catch.

There is a 30 day money back guarantee if the book arrives damaged or is not as described. Please contact us prior if you have any issues with your purchases and we will make sure you are taken care of.

About Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Yesterday's Book Shop is an independent, family-owned establishment. The store first opened in 1966 under the name Collector's Corner and was located in Western Maryland. The Collector's Corner dealt mainly in books but also sold stamps and assorted ephemera. In 1975 the name was changed to Yesterday's Book Shop when the store only offered books and printed matter. In the early 2000s the brick and mortar store was closed and now we only sell online.

All of the book pictures were taken at the time the book was listed and we never use generic or stock photos in any listing. If you would like additional photos or information on any listing please let us know and we will be more than happy to comply.
