About This Item

Newburyport: Daniel Bayley, 1771. The Seventh Edition, with Additions. Music engraved throughout recto and verso. Vol. 1: 4. [1], 10pp., plus engraved plates 1-96; Vol. 2: [4]pp, engraved plates 1-96. Manuscript music on rear endpaper. Oblong 8vo. Contemporary calf, worn, lacks upper cover. The Seventh Edition, with Additions. Music engraved throughout recto and verso. Vol. 1: 4. [1], 10pp., plus engraved plates 1-96; Vol. 2: [4]pp, engraved plates 1-96. Manuscript music on rear endpaper. Oblong 8vo. Bayley published "editions and issues of Tans'ur's The Royal Melody Complete, Williams's Universal Psalmodist and Tansur-Williams-Bayley's The American Harmony that appeared in New England between 1767 and 1774, thereby creating a major bibliographic tangle. Because some of the same engraved plates were used for every issue of the three related works, the three must be described together. Bayley's dominant role in the project explains why the works are here listed under his name, rather than Tans'ur or Williams's" (Britton and Lowens). Evans 12241; Britton and Lowens 60b; ESTC W11559
