Sonnet 1 begins "Lucky the living child born in a land/ Bordered by rivers of enormous flow/ Missouri talking through its throat of sand/ Mississippi with with ice and snow". And, Sonnet 100: "Lucky the living child born in a land/ Whose fault and lack are publicly admitted/ --- Let this, her land, be always such a place/ Where having freedom is like having bread".
