About This Item
This bicycling manual is a second writing by the author, who added some 56 pages of updating to his original manual of 1879. The hardcover binding is black board, embossed to resemble leather, with gilt lettering on the front and spine. The front inscription--much larger than the title/author inscribed on the spine--heralds the manufacturer, Pope Mfg. Co. of Boston. Actually, Pope--a manufacturer of small labor-saving devices such as cigarette rollers--began with bicycles imported from England and expanded its production as the new conveyances became popular in America. Though the frontispiece states that the manual was "printed for the author," one wonders if perhaps Pope actually paid for it in exchange for the prominent advertisement on its front. Besides the separation of the spine cover from the front, the cover is in fair shape, with scuffing to the edges and corners. All pages are intact and firmly attached, without markings or inscriptions throughout. There are 24 unattributed illustrations, mostly intext. A very interesting little book--it even has a section on the appropriate use of bugle signals for fleets of bicyclers to use, based on the tunes that directed military cavalry troops. A great period piece!
