A newspaper and radio personality, he was also the editor of The American Home and Ladies' Home Journal and the author of a number of books, including his 1950 debut Your Dream Home: How to Build It For Less Than $3500, The Amateur Builder's Handbook and 1970's The Dream House Encyclopedia. Cited as "an authority on home improvement and building", he was widely known in the Do it yourself publishing field, with a column running from the 1940s through the 1960s. He also spoke out about the unrealistic pressures on American women of the 1960s. This book vividly brings to life more than 75 of our country's great conflicts with easy-to-read maps, lively text, and both modern and period illustrations. Each entry begins with a complete description of the conflict, including events leading up to it, notable commanders involved, strategies, troop sizes and strengths, terrain, and more. Each battle is illustrated with a comprehensive yet easy-to-read two-color battle map. This work takes the reader on a tour of the sites of every battle fought on American soil. In addition to the many Civil War battle grounds, American Battlefields includes sites from the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, Mexican-American conflicts and the Indian Wars. In addition to numerous maps and illustrations, the book provides historical background and analysis of the course of every battle as well as information on the sites and how to get there. An indispensable companion for anyone interested in seeing for themselves the conflicts that shaped the identity of America.
