Berkeley: Center for Chinese Studies, University of California, 1971. First Edition. Stiff wraps. Very Good. 8vo. Pp. 120. Bibliography. Index. List of publisher's titles in the series. Bound in printed card-stock wraps, now covered iwth a clear, acetate cover, removable. Slightly worn, with general edge-wear, and some foxing to edges. Inscribed by the author to A. Doak Barnett. Inscribed by Service to A. Doak Barnett. Barnett, born in Shanghai 1921, was a witness to the Chinese Civil War. He earned an MA from Yale in International Relations. He was a fellow at the Institute of Current World Affairs, and served as foreign correspondent in China for Chicago Daily News. His counsel to the White House led to Nixon's historic visit to Beijing, 1972. Service provides a rebuttal to the charges leveled against him during the McCarthy era, providing a lucid and well-referenced narrative of the final months of WWII. He underscores the accepted view held by US military brass, 1944-45, that the communist uprising could be stamped out with relative ease. A keen association copy. Bookseller inventory E061926F.

With the rubber-stamp of "Henri Vetch, The French Bookstore," Peking. Detailed topographic map of the territory that would become critical in the CBI - China-Burma-India Theater - during WWII. From a historic-cartographic standpoint, the need for accurate maps in executing Allied wartime logistics cannot have been more vital. Approaches to China by land and sea had been cut off by the Japanese. As a result, the burdensome "Hump" had to be surmounted. The E. A. Tandy-directed survey that generated this map would prove invaluable in negotiating that effort. That this copy was sold by Henri Vetch adds a hint of intrigue. More than a bookstore, Vetch's…

Hulme, Keri: The Bone People. Louisiana State University Press, A tale of New Zealand. Stated United States First Edition, 1985. 450 pages, indexed. WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).

Captain Nicolas Baudin's early 19th-century voyage of scientific discovery to Australia is a little-known event in French and Australian history. Yet that voyage played an important part in the history of Australian and Pacific colonization, and in the long story of worldwide scientific exploration. Departing Le Havre in 1800, Baudin's expedition comprised two ships--the Naturaliste and the Géographe--and 238 men, including 22 scientists. For most of the next three-and-a half years they travelled along the western and southern coasts of Australia, charting the coastline and…
