Kingsley's second novel, though the first published in book form, a 'Christian Socialist' novel, which was heavily influenced by Mayhew and Carlyle, sympathetic to 'moral' Chartism, though more hostile to "Chartist atheism and revolutionary violence" (Cazamian, 268). For an excellent overview of the novel and Kingsley's influences, see Cazamian, 'The Social Novel in England 1830-1850'. First Edition. Hardback. Good. 8vo.
