IX. 1830): "(...) An Prof. (Ernst Heinrich) Weber (Anatom; 1795-1878) habe ich das Paquetchen und die Dissertationen zur Auswahl übergeben, da er die rein anatomischen besser brauchen kann als ich, andere sammelt er nicht; einige waren ihm und mir sehr erwünscht, manche würde ich Ihnen gern zurückgeben, da Andere sie vielleicht besser brauchen können als ich und Sie sich gar zu sehr beraubt haben. Beiliegend erhalten Sie einige derjenigen Leipziger Dissertationen, die zu den besseren gehören (...) freilich bekümmert sich von den Professoren auch Niemand um dieselben; ich wünsche, daß sie Ihnen neu und wenigstens eine oder die andre, wie ich hoffe, brauchbar sein möge, die Unbrauchbaren geben Sie weiter oder vernichten sie (...)" - II. (2. I. 1831) Mit Glückwünschen zum neuen Jahr: "(...) Beifolgend erhalten Sie ein kleines von Carus redigirtes Schriftchen, welches die Frucht gemeinsamer Arbeiten mehrerer jüngerer Docenten aus hiesiger Universität enthält (...)". - III. (26. VIII. 1831): "(...) Durch die Aufnahme in die Schles. vaterländ. Gesellschaft bin ich sehr erfreut worden; ich wünsche, daß ich wenigstens (...) im Stande sein möge ihr dafür einigermaßen nützlich zu werden; (...) Vor einigen Tagen bin ich vom hiesigen Buchhändler Baumgärtner aufgefordert worden eine temporäre Zeitschrift über die Cholera herauszugeben, für die ich den Titel: Mittheilungen des Neuesten und Wissenswürdigsten, gewählt habe (...)" - IV. (3. XI. 1831): "(...) und hätten wir gewünscht, die garstige Cholera hätte die lieben Einwohner des in unserer Erinnerung so freundlich lebenden Breslau verschont. Allen Berichten nach ist aber die Sache von fern viel schlimmer als in der Nähe, und so hoffen wir auch, daß Gottes schützende Hand und Ihre Vorsicht Sie sämtlich durch die Gefahr glücklich hindurch führen wird. Durch Prof. (Ernst Theodor) Gaupp (Rechtshistoriker; 1796-1859) habe ich erfahren, daß Sie einige Sectionen an Ch(olera)- Verstorbenen gemacht haben; (...)" - V. 5. Mai 1832. Radius gratuliert Otto zu der Geburt seiner Tochter: "(...) kurz nach Empfang der erfreulichen Nachricht glaubte ich Ihnen (...) täglich eine gleiche Nachricht von meiner Frau mittheilen zu können, was sich jedoch bis zum 18t. April verzögerte, wo Sie von einem kräftigen starken Knaben glücklich entbunden worden ist (...) Wenige Tage nach Empfang Ihres Briefes erhielt ich auch das Heft (...) in welchem Ihre Beobachtungen über die Ch(olera). enthalten sind. (...)". - Selten - Aus der Sammlung Ammann. Justus Wilhelm Martin Radius (1797-1884), Arzt, ist am 14. November 1797 zu Leipzig geboren. Er besuchte die St. Thomasschule daselbst, bezog 1816 die Universität seiner Vaterstadt zum Studium der Heilkunde, wurde 1820 Magister und promovirte 1821. Nachdem er hierauf einen kurzen Aufenthalt in Wien und Berlin genommen hatte, besuchte er zwecks weiterer Ausbildung noch ein Jahr lang London und Paris und erstattete im Auftrage des preußischen Kriegsministeriums aus letztgenannter Stadt einen Bericht über den Zustand und die Behandlung der ägyptischen Augenentzündung, wofür er 1823 vom Könige mit einer goldenen Dose beschenkt wurde. Nach seiner Rückkehr habilitirte er sich 1822 als Privatdocent an der medicinischen Facultät der Leipziger Hochschule, an welcher er ununterbrochen bis zu seinem Lebensende als sehr beliebter und angesehener Lehrer gewirkt hat. Zugleich entfaltete er eine außerordentlich rege und vielseitige, sowohl praktische wie schriftstellerische Thätigkeit. 1825 wurde er zum Prof. e. o. ernannt und erlangte bald eine sehr bedeutende ärztliche, resp. augenärztliche Praxis in der Stadt Leipzig, wurde 1829 zum Director der neubegründeten Medicinischen Gesellschaft ernannt, an deren Spitze er bis 1861 stand, fungirte auch von 1832 ab (bis 1853) als Arzt am Georgenspital, wurde 1840 ordentlicher Professor der Pathologie, las anfangs über Augenheilkunde, sowie über verschiedene Zweige der allgemeinen Pathologie und Therapie und gab am Georgenspital klinische Demonstrationen in der Psychiatrie, wandte aber später sich ausschließlich der Hygiene und Pharmakologie zu, feierte 1861 sein 50jähriges Doctorjubiläum, bei welcher Gelegenheit seine Schüler eine "Radius-Stiftung" zur Unterstützung nothleidender Aerzte und deren Hinterbliebenen begründeten, deren Capital bei der Feier des 60jährigen Doctorjubiläums von R. 1871 ansehnlich vergrößert wurde, erhielt 1875 den Vorsitz in der Prüfungscommission und starb am 7. März 1884. R. war ein außerordentlich fleißiger und gelehrter Arzt, dessen Kenntnisse sich auf die verschiedensten Gebiete der Medicin erstreckten. Seine zahlreichen Schriften, von denen das med. Schriftstellerlexicon von Callisen (Bd. XV S. 299 und Bd. XXXI S. 336) ein ausführliches bis zum Jahre 1845 reichendes Verzeichniß bringt, beziehen sich gleichfalls auf verschiedene Specialdisciplinen der Medicin, sind übrigens alle in Leipzig erschienen. Am bekanntesten ist die 1831 und 1832 von ihm herausgegebene "Cholera-Zeitung", deren Fortsetzung als "Wöchentliche Beiträge zur medicinischen und chirurgischen Klinik" (1833) erschien. Erwähnenswerth sind ferner die mit Joh. Christ. A. Clarus gearbeiteten: "Beiträge zur practischen Heilkunde mit vorzüglicher Berücksichtigung der medicinischen Geographie, Topographie und Epidemiologie" (Leipzig 1834-36), dann ein im Verein mit Wilh. Walther und M. Jäger verfaßtes "Handwörterbuch der gesammten Chirurgie und Augenheilkunde" und schließlich seine als Theil der "Opera scriptorum classicorum" (1827-34) veranstaltete Ausgabe der Werke von Morgagni und Ramazzini, sowie eine Ausgabe der "Scriptores ophthalmici minores" (Vol. I-III).
