London, John Cassell, 1854, First edition. . contemporary half green morocco, marbled boards, gilt spine lettering on leather label, edges worn, rubbed, repair at top of joint, interior clean, sound and very good in good cover. . 4to [28 x 20 cm]; viii, 634 pp, frontis view of Geneva from the lake, map (showing Alps, Switzerland, Savoy, Piedmont, Lombardy), 161 illustrations including 21 full-page from drwgs, index, title vignette. . Neate W78, citing only the American edition: 'Includes account of early Mont Blanc ascents, reproductions of some of Auldjo's engravings, an account of early ascents of the Jungfrau, selections of mountain poetry, etc'. A well-illustrated work that also includes a brief directions for travellers, descriptions of each region in some detail, with approximately a quarter of the content on Italy. The illustrations include numerous views such as Basel, Bern, Brixen, Chamonix, Como, Erlenbach, Geneva, Grindelwald, Interlaken, Lugano, Milan, Padua, Reichenau, Schaffhausen, Schlanders, Trient, Venice, Verona, Zug, etc. No copies are listed in auction records of the last 26 years.
