About This Item
London: Frederick Muller. Very Good/Very Good. 1989. First Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo 0091737702 Dust jacket unclipped. Green cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership marks. 339 pages clean and tight. The Alpine Journal is unique in mountain literature. It has been published regularly since 1863 as `a record of mountain adventure and scientific observation' and follows Peaks Passes and Glaciers which started publication in 1859. Throughout its long tradition, the Alpine Journal has contained contributions from leading mountaineers and the tradition continues to this day. This volume encompasses mountain exploits as varied as Stephen Venables's epic solo ascent of Everest, without oxygen and by a new route, and his mother's more light-hearted adventures on Mount Kenya. There are accounts of important British successes on Everest's NE ridge, Menlungtse, Cho Oyu, Kungyang Kish and Jitchu Drake, and of exploration and climbing in India, China and the USSR, Borneo, Alaska, Norway, Scotland and, of course, the European Alps. Africa features prominently, in commemoration of the hundredth anniversary of the first ascent of Kilimanjaro. Once again, the Alpine Journal has much to offer to all who love the mountains. .
