About This Item

New York: American Museum of Natural History, 1993. Reprint.. A fine (new) copy.. Pp. (Text): Vol. 1: (24), 258, (8), 192, (6), 234; Vol. 2: (8), 160, x, (4), 146; Vol. 3: x, 128, (8), 152, (6), 126; Vol. 4: x, (2), 144, (8), 174, (6), 192; (Plates): Vol. 1: pp. (1), 216 fine color-printed plates; Vol. 2: (1), 216 fine color-printed plates. The text volumes are bound in white laminated boards, lettered in black on the spine and front covers with tan endpapers, 4to (11.1 x 9. 75 inches). The plate volumes are bound in brown textured cloth (simulated leather), with the spine and front cover lettered in gilt, folio (16.1 x 10.75 inches). This is a fine facsimile reprint of this rare ichthyological work originally published in Berlin in 1782-1795. The work covers the general natural history of fishes with a primary focus on the economic natural history of fishes in Germany and secondary focus on the natural history of foreign fishes. The fine color plates, are after paintings by F. G. Berger, G. Bodenehr, C. Darchow, C. F. Gürsch, L. Schmidt, J.G. Schmidt and others. The color plates in this facsimile are extraordinarily well-produced - the colors are vivid and bright with excellent color separation. These fine color plates are printed on glossy clay-coated paper which provides excellent color reproduction. This is the only reprint published of this important work. There is one copy of the first edition of this work being offered online for $140,000. Thus, this reprint is a bargain by comparison. The copy used to reprint this work is housed in the Rare Book Room of the American Museum of Natural of Natural History. This large and heavy set weighs 27 lbs. Media mail postage within the USA is $25. Shipment to Europe or Asia will be about $125. No ownership marks.
