Newnes 1936 (1st.ed.). 9 x 5.5 ins. Blue cloth hardback with gilt to spine. With original illustrated dustwrapper. Top edges darkened. In good condition with good dustwrapper (dw; darkened, edges and corners rubbed, with some minor tears, small marks). Not price clipped. Spine a little dulled. Corners slightly bumped. Some very light foxing and marks to outer page edges, inscription on first blank page, else a clean and tight copy throughout. 252pp. 9 b/w Photo.plts. 4 maps. (+Maps on endpapers.) Reconstruction of an alibi defence (Canning case 1753-4). Darton tracks the alibi of a family of gypsies from Somerset through Dorset, Wilts, and Hants to London. Mary Squires was accused of abducting Elizabeth Canning in Enfield.
