The enigmatic story of Alger Hiss (1904 - 1996) in particular, and of the American political scene of the late 1950s. Journalist John Chabot Smith (-2002) covered the trails of Alger Hiss (1949-1950) for the New York Herald Tribune. Lawyer, government official, author, and lecturer, Hiss was imprisoned when ex-Communist agent and spy Whittaker Chambers (1901 - 1961) named Hiss as a co-conspirator, essentially on evidence produced from a hollowed out pumkin ... known as the "pumpkin papers". Strong copy despite flaws.
